THIS EMPTY WORLD:

NEW SERIES OF 45 PHOTOS RELEASING JANUARY 23, 2019

THIS EMPTY WORLD, OUT FEB 1 2019.

128 pages, 84 photos,  15" x 13"
Thames & Hudson, Feb, 2019

$65 / £45

SIGNED COPIES are available online at photoeye.com or through galleries representing Nick Brandt.

This Empty World addresses the escalating destruction of the African natural world at the hands of humans, showing a world where, overwhelmed by runaway development, there is no longer space for the animals to survive. The people in the photos are also often helplessly swept along by the relentless tide of 'progress'.

Each image is a combination of two moments in time, captured weeeks apart, almost all from the exact same locked-off camera position.

Initially, a partial set is built and lit. Weeks, even months, follow, while the animals that inhabit the region become comfortable enough to enter the frame.

Once the animals are captured on camera, the full sets - bridge and highway construction sites, a petrol station, a bus staiton and more - are built by the art department team. In all but a few of the photos, the camera remains fixed in place throughout.

A second sequence is then photographed with full set, and a large cast of people drawn from the local communities and beyond. The final large scale prints are a composite of the two elements.

The book reproduces the panoramic tableaux at maximum size (30"/ 70cm) on the double page spreads.

Brandt contributes two essays: The first deals with the concept of the series, the second a behind-the-scenes description of the elaborate production, with multiple accompanying making-of photos.

(Note: the images were all photographed on local Maasai community land in Kenya. After the sets were removed and all their elements recycled with almost zero waste, no evidence of the shoot now remains in the landscape).

PRE-RELEASE OF SEVEN PHOTOGRAPHS FROM NEW SERIES,

"THIS EMPTY WORLD", ON OCTOBER 18

The series deals with the escalating destruction of the natural world at the hands of man, and shows a world in which, overwhelmed by runaway human development, there is no longer space for animals to survive.

Photographed in Kenya, the new is all color and (medium format) digital for the first time, featuring constructed sets and cast of many, and is mostly photographed at night.

Exhibitions are still being organised, but the first four open in February in London, New York, Berlin & Los Angeles. See the Exhibitions page for more details.

The book will be published by Thames & Hudson in Feb. 2019. $65 / £45, 15.3"x13.3", 128 pages.

NOW ON INSTAGRAM AT @nickbrandtphotography

Having resisted it for years, I have just started an Instagram page and am currently posting daily stories there.

Given what an abysmal visual platform it is for images with any kind of detail - it makes Facebook feel like an Imax movie screen by way of comparison - I mention this with some reluctance.

But if you are on Instagram and want to see more regular stories of each photo, please go to nickbrandtphotography.

However, obviously the far superior viewing experience is on this website so please keep coming here.

50 CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHERS YOU SHOULD KNOW (Prestel)

A new book recently published - 50 CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHERS YOU SHOULD KNOW (Prestel) - features some of my favorite living photographers like Sally Mann, Sebastiao Salgado, Gregory Crewdson, Roger Ballen, Philip Lorca DiCorcia, Michael Kenna and Josef Koudelka, alongside many others like Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Annie Leibowitz, and William Eggleston.

I am very honored to be included in the group.
